Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Books Scheme.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

47 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Education her views on whether the amount of book grants paid to Palmerstown community school, Dublin 22 is adequate, particularly in the light of the introduction of the new junior certificate curriculum; if she will substantially increase the grant; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department's grant towards the cost of school books for necessitous pupils attending Palmerstown community school was increased quite substantially last year, an increase of 23 per cent on the previous year.

I am concerned to ensure that the grants under this scheme are targeted at those children most in need. For this reason, I am having the scheme revised for the 1992-93 school year with a view to providing a more equitable distribution of the funds in question.
