Vol. 412 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Entry Requirement.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

145 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the standard of Irish necessary for entry to the Garda Síochána; if this standard is insisted on in all cases and, if not, if he will outline the exceptions; and if any changes are proposed or intended.

In accordance with the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, to be eligible to compete for entry to the Garda Síochána a candidate must have obtained a grade not lower than "D" in Irish in the leaving certificate examination of the Department of Education or in another examination which, in the opinion of the Minister, is of a standard not lower than the standard of that examination. There are no exceptions to this requirement and there are no plans to change it.
