Vol. 412 No. 6

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

143 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the number of remedial teachers who have been approved by her Department to teach in the Dublin area; and the number of schools that have made applications for a remedial teacher so approved and are currently awaiting a decision by her Department.

There are currently 335 remedial teachers operating in primary schools in the Dublin area. These includes nine additional teachers allocated to the area in the current year as part of a national distribution of 80 such posts under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

A total of 124 primary schools sought the services of a remedial teacher. Of these, 16 benefited under the above allocation. A further 35 already have a remedial teaching service.

The recent appointments were made following the collection of data and information by my Department's primary inspectorate from schools. The posts were then allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected by the Department's inspectorate.

The matter of the further allocation of remedial teachers will be kept under review.
