Vol. 412 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Cork School Transport.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

144 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she will investigate the school transport arrangements being provided for a person (details supplied) in County Cork with a view to improving these arrangements.

My Department provide transport facilities for children attending special schools where this can be done within reasonable cost limits.

The child in question resides 22 miles from Our Lady of Good Counsel Special School, Lota, Glanmire and is availing of transport on a special service from Farran, County Cork.

Up to the end of the last school year the nearest pick-up point for the child in question was at Ballincollig, a distance of 11.1 miles from his home.

However, as an exceptional measure, my Department sanctioned a partial extension of 4.5 miles in August 1991 to enable him to be picked up at Farran, a distance of 6.6 miles from his home. A grant towards private transport arrangements to the pick up point is being availed of by the parents.
