Vol. 412 No. 7

Written Answers. - Chemical Pulp Mill.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

20 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it has been ascertained that there is sufficient timber available on this island to justify the setting up of a chemical pulp mill; and if he will outline the initiatives the IDA are taking in this matter.

The question of timber availability is a matter which falls within the area of responsibility of my colleague the Minister for Energy, who has informed me that Coillte Teo, is satisfied that there is sufficient timber available on this island to warrant the establishment of a pulp mill.

The IDA and Coillte have been working closely to identify potential investors who might be interested in establishing a pulp mill in Ireland. Discussions have been held with a number of companies already. All discussions between the IDA and potential investors are, of course, confidential to the parties involved in accordance with normal IDA practice. An early decision is not expected, however in the light of the currently depressed state of the pulp and paper markets worldwide.
