Vol. 413 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Discipline Circular.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

174 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the status of the recent departmental circular on discipline sent out to schools throughout the country; and if schools are obliged to implement any of the directives included in the circular.

Circular Letter M33/91, which issued to the authorities of post-primary schools in October 1991 contains "Guidelines Towards a Positive Policy for School Behaviour and Discipline" together with "A suggested Code of Behaviour and Discipline for Post-Primary Schools".

As stated in that circular, circumstances will vary from school to school and it is only those intimately involved with a particular school who can draw up a code appropriate for that school. In drawing up the code, school authorities should have regard to the guidelines issued by my Department.
