Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Illegal Parking.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

187 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if he will outine, under the existing parking controls in Cork city, the number of cars which have been towed away in (1) 1988, (2) 1989, (3) 1990 and (4) up to October 1991 due to illegal parking; if he will further outline the tow-away fines which were imposed and collected and the cost of providing the tow-away service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a tow-away truck was issued to Cork east division in February 1990, at a cost of £18,207. The truck is used to tow vehicles away after accidents, remove vehicles causing an obstruction and generally help the gardaí in overall traffic control.

There is no centralised car compound in Cork city at present and the tow-away truck operates on the basis of local demands to have vehicles removed. No tow-away charges are levied in respect of these vehicles and records have not been kept of the number of vehicles towed away.
