Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Toxic Waste Disposal.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

219 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment if any high or low level toxic waste is shipped from Ireland and disposed of or treated overseas; if so, (1) the amount of waste involved, (2) where it is shipped, (3) the actual content of the waste, (4) if he will outline where exactly it is treated or disposed overseas and the cost per year; and if he will give details of all relevant figures for the last ten years.

I refer to the reply to Question No. 78 of 6 February 1991 which provided information in respect of 1988, the latest year for which such information is available in my Department. The position is not thought to have altered materially in the meantime.

The supervision and control functions relating to exports of hazardous wastes are vested in the main local authorities under the European Communities (Transfrontier Shipment of Hazardous Waste) Regulations, 1988, and details of the exports involved are not, therefore, available in my Department. I am aware, however, that most of the exported waste is sent for treatment or disposal in the UK, with relatively small quantities going to France and Finland.
