Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

275 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if he has any plans, in the context of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, to improve the pupil/teacher ratio in primary or second level schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The provision in relation to improvements in the pupil-teacher ratio in primary and post-primary schools is set out in paragraph 69 (a) — (e) of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

276 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if he has received any requests for improvement of the pupil-teacher ratio in primary or second level schools in County Kildare; if he will be dealing with these requests; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under the provisions of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, my Department introduced new staffing schedules which have led to an improvement in the pupil-teacher ratio at both primary and post primary level. The County Kildare vocational education committee and individual primary and post primary schools have made requests for additional staffing and an improvement in their pupil-teacher ratios. These requests have been considered by my Department and the relevant authorities notified of the outcome.

It would not be in accordance with normal procedure to give details of the individual cases.
