Vol. 414 No. 1

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Pensions.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

24 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider introducing the necessary enabling legislation to ensure that the widows of Defence Forces personnel qualify for widow's pension, given that the spouses of these women could have served up to 45 years in the Defence Forces, and through no fault of their own, they are not entitled to a pension.

I would refer the Deputy to my predecessor's reply to Question No. 234 on 30 October 1991.

The examination of the possibility of re-opening options in relation to membership of the contributory spouses' and children's pension scheme is nearing completion and a decision in the matter will shortly be reached.
