90 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Justice the numbers of reported car thefts in the area of Dublin city covered by Store Street gardaí in (1) 1988, (2) 1989 and (3) 1990; the number of reported stolen vehicles in the area recovered undamaged; the number recovered damaged or burnt out; and the numbers never recovered in each of the years given.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that the information sought by the Deputy is readily available and is set out in the following tabular statement.
While the Garda do not generally maintain records of the number of vehicles damaged or burnt out, there has been, as it happens, a practice of keeping certain records in the Store Street area. These indicate that over the past three years somewhere in the region of 25 per cent of the vehicles recovered in that area are either damaged or burnt out.
