109 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of (1) VAT and (2) excise duty paid to the Exchequer in respect of used cars in each of the past four years; the number of motor vehicles involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

112 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the total number of used cars imported into the country in each of the last 4 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 109 and 112 together.

The information on imports requested by the Deputy is given in the following table.

Excludes cars brought into the country by their owners on transfer of residence.
I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that records are not maintained in such a manner as would enable the required information on VAT and excise duty paid to the Exchequer in respect of used cars to be given in the time available. Details of the excise duty paid and an estimate of the VAT involved are being prepared and I will communicate this information to the Deputy as soon as it becomes available.
