Vol. 414 No. 9

Written Answers. - Littleton (Tipperary) Road Works.

Michael Lowry

Ceist:

107 Mr. Lowry asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the progress made in regard to proposals by Tipperary North County Council, in consultation with Department officials, to carry out remedial works to eliminate the serious traffic and pedestrian dangers at Littleton, Thurles, County Tipperary; when works will proceed; and the costs involved.

The implementation of traffic control measures at Littleton is primarily a matter for Tipperary (North Riding) County Council. I am aware that the council have, over the last two years, carried out a number of measures at Littleton to improve road safety. These measures, which were financed from State road grants, include the provision and marking of kerbs in the village to narrow and better delineate the road carriageway; provision of a pedestrian hand rail near shops; extension of double white lines to prevent overtaking; provision of oversized speed limit signs and repeater signs through the village.

It is considered that the open road situation at Littleton does not offer a suitable location for the use of "rumble strips" and the council were advised accordingly in October 1990. No further proposals for remedial works have been received from the council to date.
