24 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, having regard to the Government announcement of December 1990 of plans by the US computer company, Seagate Technology, to locate a plant in Clonshaugh Industrial Estate, Dublin 5, giving 1,300 jobs, he will outline the latest information available to his Department regarding the company's plans; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Arising out of the downturn in the world computer market, component suppliers, such as Seagate Technology, have had to reassess the global strategy particularly as regards investment. Against such a scenario, Seagate Technology have deferred, for at least 12 months, their plans to manufacture in Europe.
The IDA are continuing to work with the company to ensure that Ireland remains the chosen location when Seagate's European strategy is reviewed. The IDA are continuing to show the premises in Clonshaugh to a number of potential buyers/investors in an effort to find a replacement project for the locality.
