Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Area Status Appeals.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

171 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the progress, if any, which has been made on the surveying of land which is on appeal for disadvantaged area status in South Tipperary; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

201 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when the appeals survey will commence in County Laois; if he will outline the number of surveyors that his Department will make available to undertake this survey; and when the survey will be completed.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 171 and 201 together.

Work on the inspection of farms commenced in all appeal areas including South Tipperary and County Laois this week. My Department in association with the appeals panel will be surveying all of the 40,000 farms which have appealed their non-inclusion in the disadvantaged areas. The surveys are taking place in 15 counties and every farmer will receive an advance notification by post of the date of the visit to his/her farm.

The total number of inspectors involved in the field survey work is in excess of 150 and the inspections are expected to be completed in all areas within three months. The task of processing the very large amount of data on computer is scheduled to start in late March and it is expected that preliminary results will be available in the autumn.
