Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Visa Applications.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

292 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice the reason his Department are refusing to grant a multiple entry visa to foreign students attending courses in Irish colleges and universities unlike Great Britain where multiple entry visas are granted as the single entry visa prevents students from returning home on holidays at Christmas time.

The implication in the question that a single entry visa prevents foreign students from returning home at Christmas is not correct because it is, of course open to such students to apply for a re-entry visa.

All visa applications are considered on an individual basis. It has never been the practice to disclose reasons for the refusal to grant a particular visa and I do not propose to depart from that practice on this occasion.

Ceist:

293 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice the reason entry visas have been refused consistently since October, 1991 to Chinese nationals wishing to attend university courses in Ireland.

The implication in the question that all visa applications from Chinese students wishing to study at university here have been refused since October 1991 is incorrect.

The position is that all visa applications are considered on an individual basis.
