Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Taxi Licence Figures.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

305 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline (1) the number of taxi licences in South Tipperary and (2) the number of new licences that will be granted; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations provide for the operation of taxis (i.e. public hire vehicles) only in areas which are designated as taximeter areas. There are no such areas in South Tipperary. A review of the procedures governing the licensing and operation of small public service vehicles generally is at present being carried out and the question of applying taximeter area status to towns where taxis do not operate at present is among the issues being considered. I expect a final report from the review group to be submitted to me by early March.
