Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Services for the Mentally Handicapped.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

380 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health if she will outline the current provision for the ongoing care of mentally handicapped children in the South Eastern Health Board area, particularly in the South Tipperary area; and the plans she has to upgrade these services so that there is continuing provision by the State of residential and other care for handicapped children in this area.

In the South-Eastern Health Board region day and/or residential services for children with a mental handicap are provided by:

1. the health board at St. John of God House, Enniscorthy;

2. the Irish Sisters of Charity at St. Patrick's, Kells Road, Kilkenny and at Sacred Heart Day Unit, Lady Lane, Waterford;

3. the Camphill Village Communities at Ballytobin, County Kilkenny;

4. the Holy Angels Committee at Strawhall, Carlow;

5. St. Claire's Trust at Clifford Street, Enniscorthy;

6. County Tipperary Association for the Mentally Handicapped at Cashel and

7. Holy Family Sisters at Callan Road, Kilkenny.

In addition there are ten special schools in the region. Two of the special schools are in the South Tipperary area. They are Scoil Cormaic and Scoil Aonghusa both of which are in Cashel.

Services in the region will be developed in line with the priorities agreed locally and the resources available to me in 1992 for new services.

I have already discussed the provision of services for the region with my colleague the Minister for Education and will be arranging for officials of both Departments to meet shortly for further discussions.
