Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork School Staffing.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

409 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the recent classification as disadvantaged which was extended to a post-primary school (details supplied) in County Cork, he will outline his plans to remedy the situation where there is no secretary, caretaker, liaison officer or remedial teachers ex-quota paid for by his Department.

This school was one of the post-primary schools in disadvantaged areas which were allocated an additional teacher this year in accordance with the terms of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

The school authorities were informed that consideration should be given to the use of this resource for the purpose of providing remedial help to the children and to developing home/school liaison in order to advise parents and to involve them in the education of their children.

A specific provision for the appointment of caretakers and secretaries in post-primary schools is being dealt with in the context of ongoing discussions on the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.
