Richard Bruton

Ceist:

169 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if she will outline the growth in the number of attendances at accident and emergency departments of hospitals in the past four years.

The trend in total numbers of casualty attendances at the out-patient departments of all acute hospitals over the past four years is shown in the following table. The 1991 data relates to the first three quarters only.

Casualty Attendances at Acute Hospitals 1988-1991

Casualty Attendances

1988

1,007,533

1989

1,062,532

1990 1

1,107,837

1991 (Jan.-Sept.)2

806,060

1 The figure for 1990 is revised from the previously published estimate of 1,127,120.
2 The figure for Jan.-Sept. 1991 excludes district hospitals for which information is collected on an annual basis only. The 1990 total for district hospitals was 7,353.
The above information including a detailed breakdown for each hospital is published annually in the Health Statistics series by my Department.
