Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Community Services Spending.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

172 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if she will give details of the base-year, 1990 figures for (i) capital and (ii) current spending on community based and associated services in respect of which Programme for Economic and Social Progress commitments of £100 million extra capital and £90 million extra current spending in real terms were given; and if she will outline the spending-costs in 1991 and projected for 1922 in respect of each.

The services in respect of which commitments have been entered into under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, and the revised 1990 provision in respect of each of these services excluding cash allowances, where available, are as follows:

Service

£m.

Services for the Physically Disabled

20.842

Mental Handicap Services

131.082

Psychiatric Services

168.552

Dental Services

16.971

Due to the manner in which funding of services for the elderly and child care services are accounted for it is not possible to disaggregate the institutional and community elements of the funding. In addition, given that services for the elderly and child care services are provided on a multi-disciplinary basis across many cost centres, it is not possible to extract these specific elements from the total expenditure in the relevant cost centres. Additional expenditure on health centres will be of a capital nature.
The additional revenue costs of community based services funded under theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress in 1991 was £8 million. This expediture will be maintained in 1992 and, in addition, a further £8 million has been provided: £2 million in the Estimates and £6 million in the budget.
No additional capital funding has, as yet, been provided under the terms of theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress.
