Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Educational Facilities for Gifted Children.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

190 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if his Department will fund the education of a gifted child in a school suitable to his needs, because he cannot pursue his education in the local post-primary school; if he will outline his policy in the matter of gifted children; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department is fully aware that there are certain pupils in our schools who display aptitudes, talents and levels of attainment which are far in excess of their age peers. It is essential that where pupils of exceptional talent are identified they should be exposed to challenging learning experiences.

My Department had designated some officials to assist schools in devising and implementing suitable programmes for such children. If the Deputy will let me have particulars of any such pupils my Department will be in touch with their schools with regard to meeting the particular needs of these exceptional pupils.
