Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waste Recycling.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

34 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment whether he intends to make any arrangements for the recycling of PET plastic bottles-containers in view of the closure of Superwood in Bray.

The promotion of commercial ventures based on reprocessing of plastic or other waste materials would be principally a matter for the industrial development agencies. In accordance with an undertaking of the Environment Action Programme, the IDA, to assist the development of initiatives in this area, have commissioned studies of the feasibility of establishing new industries based on recycling.

With a view to increasing waste recycling levels generally, my Department have also commissioned a study to assess the overall potential for recycling in Ireland from the domestic-commercial waste stream. The brief for the study includes examining the scope for improving markets for recyclable materials and the feasibility of various possible market interventions or incentives. I will be evaluating all of the options referred for consideration to the consultants when their study is completed.
