Vol. 415 No. 9

Written Answers. - Teaching Irish Texts.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

168 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the appallingly low level of provision of texts to teach Irish through an out of date programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I consider that there are sufficient textbooks available at present for the teaching of Irish. In relation to Irish in the curriculum I wish to inform the Deputy that the primary curriculum review body made certain recommendations in this regard. The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) are examining the recommendations of this report with a view to advising on the formulation of a future primary schools curriculum in Irish.

At post-primary level, a new syllabus in Irish was introduced for the junior certificate in 1989 and will be examined for the first time this year. Revisions have also been made in the leaving certificate Irish syllabus and the NCCA propose to review the matter in depth and to make recommendations on the future provision for Irish at senior cycle.
