Vol. 415 No. 9

Written Answers. - Free School Transport Service.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

40 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education the reason a free school transport service has been denied to pupils from the Moyglare and old Carton areas of Maynooth, County Kildare, to the primary schools in Maynooth, despite having the required numbers of pupils at the required ages and distances from the schools and despite all of this having been examined and found to be so by his Department and their agencies; if he will now provide the service, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

156 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if the free school transport to Maynooth girls national school for children from the Old Carton area was terminated for financial reasons; if he intends to reconsider this decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 156 together.

In view of the latest information from Bus Éireann concerning the number of eligible pupils using this service, the service will be restored.

The service will be maintained as long as there is a minimum of ten eligible pupils regularly using the service. This is one of the essential requirements for establishing and maintaining the service.

In the operation of the school transport services Bus Eireann are required to make the necessary local arrangements in the most economic way possible.
