Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Kerry River Maintenance Work.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

37 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide the necessary funds to carry out urgent maintenance work on the Cashen River, County Kerry, in view of the rapidly increasing siltation which is causing extensive flooding to the surrounding land at this location; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The funding of maintenance works on the Feale catchment drainage scheme in County Kerry of which the Cashen River forms part, is met from the allocation for arterial drainage maintenance in the Vote for the Office of Public Works. Critical sections are being given priority within the limited resources available. I am aware that siltation does occur in the Cashen estuary but there is no evidence at present that this is significantly affecting water levels.
