Vol. 416 No. 8

Written Answers. - Motor Insurers' Claims.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

114 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment whether he expects claims against the Motor Insurer's Bureau to increase in the future and if so, if he will give details of the extent of the expected increase; the way in which these claims are to be funded; if he will outline the cost, if known, for a full year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Claims against the Motor Insurers' Bureau are likely to increase as a result of the extension of their liability to cover property damage with effect from 31 December 1992. The bureau have not furnished my Department with any estimate of the likely increase in claims or the financial implications. The bureau are funded by licensed motor insurers who are required, by law, to be members of the bureau.
