Vol. 416 No. 8
121 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment if untreated sewage is being discharged into the sea at or near the east Meath coast, and if so, if he will outline the action he proposes to take on the matter.
122 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the areas in County Meath likely to benefit under the £630 million programme for sewage treatment improvement to be implemented between now and the year 2000.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 121 and 122 together.
The environment action programme stated the Government's commitment to eliminating untreated discharges of sewage from major coastal areas and all pollution of inland waters by sewage discharges by the year 2000.
The feasibility of connecting the existing untreated discharges from the Bettystown, Mornington and Donacarney areas to the proposed secondary treatment works for Drogheda is under consideration at present. I understand that Meath County Council are also in the process of planning new and improved sewerage schemes to serve a number of inland areas including Trim, Ashbourne, Dunshaughlin, Navan, Dunboyne, Clonee and Batterstown.
