Ceist:182 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if he is prepared to permit the use of calculators for the junior certificate mathematics examination.
Written Answers. - Use of Calculators in Examination.
The general aim of teaching mathematics is, inter alia, to develop in the pupil an understanding of mathematical facts and concepts. The achievement of this aim can be tested more satisfactorily where candidates do not use calculators. The relevant examination paper itself does not have recourse to large numbers or complicated processes for which the calculator is most suited. Satisfactory results can consequently be achieved without the use of a calculator.
The use of calculators in the junior certificate examination in mathematics is not permitted at present and this will continue to be the position in 1992.
As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the use of calculators is allowed at the leaving certificate examination and in business studies at the junior certificate.
The question of the extension of the use of calculators to the junior certificate mathematics examination is being kept under review.
