Ceist:

103 Mr. Kirk asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of the estimated numbers employed in the food industry in Ireland, both primary and processed production excluding horticulture, in each of the years, (1) 1950, (2) 1960, (3) 1970, (4) 1975, (5) 1980, (6) 1985, (7) 1990, and (8) 1991.

I propose to take Question Nos. 101, 102 and 103 together.

The estimated number of persons engaged in the primary food production and food processing; textiles and footwear industries in the years 1950, 1960, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1991 is given in the following statement.

The figures relating to the primary production of food are annual labour force estimates of persons engaged in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector and have not been adjusted for those directly engaged in horticulture as such details are not available.

The estimates relating to the textile and footwear industries are derived from the Annual Census of Industrial Production and refer to all industrial establishments with three or more persons engaged. These estimates are updated for 1990 and 1991 on the basis of the quarterly industrial inquiry since the census results are not yet available for these recent years.

(1) The estimates for 1950, 1960 and 1970 are not directly comparable with those for later years as a new EC activity classification system (NACE) was adopted from 1973 onwards and the coverage of the Census of Industrial Production was extended from 1979 onwards.
(2) Estimates for 1950 relate to 1951 as 1950 data are not available.
(3) The coverage of the food processing sector was extended in the 1954 Census of Industrial Production; the estimate for 1950 is, therefore, not directly comparable with those for later years.
