Vol. 417 No. 3

Written Answers. - Accommodation for Discharged Psychiatric Patients.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

79 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the recent Cork Simon Community report to the effect that increasing numbers of discharged psychiatric patients are being left homeless and that this has created a potentially dangerous crisis in Cork.

I have not received a copy of the report referred to.

Cork Corporation have reported that they have, in accordance with guidelines issued by my Department, established on-going liaison arrangements and hold regular meetings with the Southern Health Board and with voluntary bodies working on behalf of the homeless, including Cork Simon.

I am satisfied that these arrangements and the powers of a housing authority under section 10 of the Housing Act, 1988, to secure accommodation for homeless persons, enable Cork Corporation to respond adequately to homelessness in their area.
