146 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to an incident which allegedly took place in Mountjoy Prison on or about Thursday, 5 March wherby a person (details supplied) was physically abused by prisoners in Mountjoy; whether he has investigated this matter; if he intends taking any action, and whether the results of his inquiries will be made available to Members of the Oireachtas.
The offender in question, along with three other prisoners, was involved in a fight in Mountjoy Prison at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday 4 March. The four prisoners concerned were quickly separated by prison staff and no serious injuries were sustained. The offender in question was transferred to the training unit on 6 March for his own safety. The instigators of the incident were dealt with by the Governor in accordance with the Rules for the Government of Prisons, 1947.
