Ceist:147 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of, (a) the total number of committals to prisons in this country each year and (b) the number committed to each prison.

The total number of persons committed to prison in 1989, the last date for which statistics have been compiled, is 7,150. The information sought by the Deputy in relation to the numbers committed to each prison is not readily available and could not be obtained without an inordinate investment of staff time.
