161 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the number of people, in each of the last five years for which figures are available, who have been convicted of dealing in, providing, pushing, selling or supplying drugs and the average sentence imposed, and if he will make a statement on the trend indicated and on the matter in general.
165 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details for each of the last ten years of the level of seizure of illicit drugs, and the type of substance involved, together with the percentage of successful prosecutions, in each of these years.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 161 and 165 together.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of persons convicted for offences under section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977-1984, possession for the purpose of selling or supplying, in the period 1986-1990 was as follows:
