Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Views on Divorce.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

160 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline his views on divorce.

The Deputy will appreciate that it would not be appropriate or feasible, by way of reply to a parliamentary question, for me to deal comprehensively with the complex and wide-ranging issues to which the question of the introduction of divorce — which is, of course, ultimately a matter for the people — gives rise.

As the Deputy will be aware the Government intend to publish as soon as possible a White Paper on Marital Breakdown which will represent the Government's considered approach to the myriad of problems which arise in this area. I am confident that the debate in this House on the White Paper will provide an opportunity for a comprehensive discussion of the issues which arise and I look forward, as Minister for Justice, to contributing to that debate.
