Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - BCG Vaccination Policy.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

240 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the proposals, if any, he has to introduce a national policy on BCG vaccination as the lack of a coherent national policy means that neo-natal BCG is being given on the ad hoc basis which varies county by county; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has recently issued a circular to the directors of community care in each health board which reaffirms current policy on BCG vaccination. This is that BCG may be offered to all children at birth and at 12-14 years of age if not immune to tuberculosis. It is a matter for each health board to give effect to this policy in the light of local epidemiology of the disease.
