Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Works Funding.

Austin Currie

Ceist:

282 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for the Environment whether he will make resources available to complete the Fort-hill Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, in view of its crucial importance for the future development of the area and the current effect of the unfinished road on vandalism, public transport services and the danger to pupils at the nearby St. Kevin's community college of the absence of a footpath, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As this road will not form part of the network of national roads, the timing of construction work on it is primarily a matter for Dublin County Council. The cost of the work would normally fall to be financed by the local authority from their own resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants for regional and county roads. In the current year, these grants total £1.382 million. Special road grants have been provided towards the cost of two sections of the road, Fonthill-Neilstown and Nangor Road-Boot Road, including £200,000 this year in respect of the latter section.

The road grants for the current year have already been allocated in full and there are no further funds at my disposal from which additional grants may be made this year.
