Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Motor Vehicle Taxation.

John Bruton

Ceist:

103 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the implications for employment in Meath County Council of the proposals now being considered by the Minister for Finance to transfer the administration of motor vehicle taxation to the Revenue Commissioners.

I indicated in the budget that it was proposed to introduce a first registration charge for motor vehicles to replace the current initial excise duty, which, being border controlled, must be abolished as a consequence of EC Internal Market requirements. I also indicated that, in designing the new charge to produce broadly equivalent revenue, my aim would be to take account of established administrative control and enforcement arrangements to the extent that revenue collection considerations allow. The Government are at present considering the details of the administrative arrangements to apply and the results will be reflected in the forthcoming Finance Bill. In the meantime, it would not be appropriate to speculate on the possible employment impact, if any, in Meath County Council or elsewhere, of changes that may be made.
