Vol. 418 No. 1

Written Answers. - Nursing Homes Inspection.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

131 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the number of nursing homes that have been inspected under the new legislation introduced by the nursing homes Act; the number that have been found in need of improvement in order to achieve acceptable standards; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Health (Nursing Homes) Act, 1990, has not yet been commenced, no nursing homes have been inspected under the new nursing homes legislation. Under the Homes for Incapacitated Persons Regulations, 1985, health boards are obliged to inspect private nursing homes every six months to ensure compliance with the standards of accommodation and care set out in the regulations. Health boards are providing advice to nursing homes when requested on the implications of the new nursing legislation for standards of care and accommodation in nursing homes.
