The provision and maintenance of public bathing places under the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1948, is a matter for sanitary authorities. The following bathing areas in Mayo have been identified in the European Communities (Quality of Bathing Water) Regulations, 1988, which establishes statutory bathing water quality standards and requirements in relation to water sampling and public availability of results: Bertra; Carrawmore; Keel; Keem; Ross Strand, Killala; Old Head, Louisburgh; Silver Strand, Louisburgh; Mulranny.
All of these areas met the standards for bathing water quality in 1991, as they have done since sampling under the regulations began in 1988.
