Ceist:34 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Finance when he intends to proceed with work on the arterial drainage of the Dunkellin river catchment area in Galway.

The Dunkellin River is at present at No. 10 on the priority list of minor catchments.
In 1983, the Government at the time decided that the planning of all arterial drainage schemes should cease. Subsequently, it was decided to proceed with the preliminary design only, of four rivers, including the Dunkellin River. When this is completed it will be subjected to an environmental impact assessment, which must be followed by a cost benefit analysis before any decision on whether or not the scheme should go ahead can be taken. At this stage, therefore, it would not be possible to say when a drainage scheme for the catchment might proceed.
