All fire authorities respond to calls for assistance on a 24 hour a day basis, all the year round. Five fire authorities employ mainly wholetime fire service personnel — Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Dun Laoghaire and Waterford Corporations. The other fire authorities employ mainly part-time personnel, in addition to their wholetime senior officers, although some of these authorities also have small numbers of wholetime staff at various centres.
Since 1982, 47 new fire stations have been provided. Details are set out in the following table:
