Vol. 420 No. 4

Written Answers. - Interpretative Centre.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

51 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the ongoing controversy, he will appoint an independent assessor to analyse the submissions on the Office of Public Works recent environmental impact study for the proposed centre at Mullaghmore; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The submissions received following the publication of the Environmental Impact Statement, which was carried out by independent consultants, are at present being studied by the Office of Public Works. The vast majority of these submissions were in favour of the project proceeding at the proposed location (349 out of 520). A decision on whether or not to proceed with the project will be taken in the near future. Should it be decided to proceed, the Office of Public Works will seek the approval of the planning authority, Clare County Council, to their proposals.

Copies of all submissions received and the Office of Public Works' response to same will be made available to the council to enable them to consider fully all aspects of the proposal before they decide on the matter. They will therefore have to assess all of the submissions in arriving at their decision and indeed they are the most appropriate body to do so.
