Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Gas for Electricity Generation.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

52 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Energy whether he shares the view of environmentalists that the usage of gas for electricity generation is an essentially wasteful use of limited primary energy resources.

I do not accept the view that the use of gas for electricity generation in modern high efficiency generation plant is a waste of this resource. Indeed, from an environmental point of view, increased use of gas for this purpose will be an essential element in Ireland's strategy for limitation of gaseous emissions.

This view has been endorsed by the EC, as is evidenced by the recent revocation of Council Directive 75/404 of February 1975, which restricted the use of gas in power stations.
