Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Geological Survey Review.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

53 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Energy the changes he has made in the Geological Survey as a result of the recent review of its activities.

I recently commissioned and completed a comprehensive review of the Geological Survey. This review examined the future role of the organisation and set out clearly established priorities and targets for each of its main functions. These functions will be discharged through five programmes which are here listed in order of priority. Their identification was based on consultation with clients and users of the Survey's services.

1. Bedrock Programme. This programme produces maps showing the distribution of the various rock types over the country and is of value in exploration, planning, environmental issues and public education.

2. Quaternary and Geòtechnical Programme. This programme produces maps showing the distribution of the various surface unconsolidated materials (including sand and gravel, clays and peat) over the country and is of value in exploration, planning, environmental issues and public education.

3. Groundwater Programme. This programme is aimed at the identification of underground water resources and their protection from pollution.

4.Minerals Programme. The minerals programme is directed at the identification of a wide variety of resources (e.g. metals, industrial minerals, aggregate) and at providing technical support for exploration in the country.
5.Marine Programme. The marine programme investigates the near-shore geology with the purpose of identifying mineral resources and supporting engineering projects.
Advisory functions in relation to the minerals industry, formerly handled by the Geological Survey, have been transferred to the Exploration and Mining Division of the Department. However, the Geological Survey provides technical support for commercial exploration through its programmes.
I have appointed a new Director to the Geological Survey and implementation of the changes stemming from the review has started under his management.
