Vol. 421 No. 2

Written Answers. - Free Legal Aid Funding.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

24 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the amounts of funds, by way of grant, to be paid this year to the Free Legal Aid Advice Centres and the Coolock Community Law Centre; and when these grants will be paid.

There is a provision of £40,000 in subhead C3 of the Office of the Minister for Justice Vote for 1992 for the Free Legal Advice Centres. Payment of this amount will commence as soon as the expenditure has been approved by Dáil Éireann.

I have no funds at my disposal which could be given to the Coolock Community Law Centre by way of grant or otherwise. In these times of financial stringency, apart from the special provision which was made for the Free Legal Advice Centres, it is necessary for me to allocate whatever financial resources that are available for the provision of legal services to the Legal Aid Board which is the State body which has been given the responsibility by the Government to provide as geographically-wide a civil legal aid and advice service as possible.
