Vol. 421 No. 2

Written Answers. - Maynooth (Kildare) Garda Numbers.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

71 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Justice if, given the increase in crime in Maynooth, County Kildare, which included the rape of a young woman and the theft of the Taoiseach's escort car, he will increase the manpower and other resources available to the Garda in Maynooth to deal with this upsurge in crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Maynooth Garda sub-District forms part of the Naas Garda District. Naas itself is the Divisional Headquarters for Carlow/ Kildare. The Garda authorities inform me that an extra garda was assigned to Maynooth in April of this year, bringing the current strength there to one sergeant and six gardaí. A Garda patrol car was allocated to Maynooth in 1989. The Garda authorities are satisfied that the resources available are adequate to deal with the policing needs of Maynooth and have no plans at present to further increase the force's manpower there. However, they are keeping the situation under continuing review.

Investigation into the alleged rape and unauthorised taking of an unmarked Garda car are continuing. One youth was detained in connection with the alleged rape and a file on the matter is being prepared for the law officers.
