There are no grants available for bog development. The private bog development scheme, introduced under the Turf Development Act, 1981, was terminated in 1987. The scheme fulfilled its main purpose which was to stimulate the development of private peat resources. This is evidenced by the increase in production from this source from around 1 million tonnes per annum in 1981 to 1.5 million tonnes in the current year. I have no plans to reintroduce the scheme.
