Vol. 426 No. 1

Written Answers. - Shop Opening Hours.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

118 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he will review existing planning laws under which planning permission is required for a local neighbourhood shop to extend opening hours which may have a detrimental effect on the residential area where the shop is located; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Planning permission would be required to extend a shop's opening hours if the current hours of operation are restricted by planning conditions, or if longer opening hours would constitute a material change of use of the premises. I have no proposals to change the law in this regard.
