Vol. 426 No. 1

Written Answers. - Naas (Kildare) Hospital.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

184 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health when he expects to be in a position to implement the remaining stages of the development plans for Naas Hospital, County Kildare; if funding will be available for this purpose now or in 1993; the extent of services which he anticipates will be incorporated in the remainder of the plan; if any or all of these proposals are dependent on or contingent on the proposed plan for Tallaght Hospital, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will be pleased to know that funding is being provided to enable construction of the new Tallaght Hospital to start in 1993. The hospital will have 467 beds with full state of the art support facilities. As the Deputy is aware, the Tallaght Hospital catchment area includes Naas and its environs.

The remaining stages of the development plan for Naas Hospital will, therefore, be considered in the context of an overall assessment of the acute hospital service requirements of the area in the light of the facilities to be provided at Tallaght Hospital, the capital resources available to my Department and the competing demands for hospital developments countrywide.
